✦ PROTECT PDF

Add a password to a PDF.

Lock a PDF before you email or share it: it will ask for your password before it opens, in every PDF reader. Encryption happens on your device with AES-256, the strongest PDF standard.

  • AES-256 encryption
  • Optional print and copy limits
  • Several PDFs at once

Encrypted in your browser — your PDF and password are never uploaded.

How do I put a password on a PDF?

Add the PDF, type a password twice and press Protect · download. The new PDF asks for that password in any reader: Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Preview on a Mac, and phones.

How strong is the protection?

AES-256, the strongest encryption in the PDF standard. The real protection is the password itself: use a long one, such as a few unrelated words.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered, not even by us, because the PDF is encrypted on your device and the password is never stored or sent. Keep a copy of the original PDF.

What do the print and copy restrictions do?

They ask PDF readers not to allow printing, copying or changes, even after the PDF is opened. Most readers respect them, but some do not, so do not rely on them alone.

Are my PDF and password uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser; neither the PDF nor the password reaches our server.
